Front Room Theatre aims to create interesting, non-literal, fully immersive, quality story-telling. See About Us for our mission statement. As well as intimate theatre in living rooms Front Room Theatre (FRT) has expanded since 2010 to perform in theatres and schools. Front Room Theatre is based in the Shooters Hill area of South East London, UK. Brian Astbury (great teacher, phtotographer, writer and more) gave FRT the idea of performing in living rooms, 'or front rooms' which is where it started in 2010 with a performance at a dining event in Basingstoke. FRT especially focuses on venues that don't often receive a large number of professional touring companies. The company is able to adapt to venues. Their current touring show is
Lie Back and Think of America
Lie Back and Think of America appears to be performed by several actors, despite there being just one actor on stage. The audience is included and made to feel part of the play, and may be asked to don a hat for a scene or two, although no-one is asked to join the actor on stage, the audience stays firmly in its seats! Shows in development include:
Scenes from Shakespeare
Evacuees of Llanelli
Chekhov's Three Sisters
and
Songs from the Shows

Lie Back and Think of America (1 hour, 15)
Sarah Smith of Bethnal Green is tired... of looking after her younger brother and taking the rap for his behaviour, of working in the munitions factory, of bomb-induced sleepless nights. She misses her father, her little sister Lucy evacuated to Wales and a decent meal. Enter Joe, an American GI with a past of his own and a love of the jitterbug. If he finds out the truth about Sarah, will he still want her? Meanwhile, Lucy Smith, eight-years old, evacuated and angry does everything she can to be sent back home from Llanelli to Bethnal Green. Will she manage to get back to her family - and can she avoid Mrs Allbright's cane in the process? A play about the transforming effect of love against social prejudice, about being yourself, accepting yourself and hoping others will too.
INFLUENCES
'Lie Back and Think of America' was inspired by the documentary 'Choc'late Soldiers from the USA', a copy of which was given to the writer of 'Lie Back and Think of America' on a train journey by Professor Alan Rice (University of Central Lancashire). FRT is very grateful for this meeting and would like to thank Professor Rice for taking the time to talk about the documentary and the journey that FRT has been on because of this chance meeting.
